Marc Copeland WFDU FM Featured Cut: Light Years - from Total Eclipse

Where did you get your start?

- I grew up in Queens, New York. Music and musicians were everywhere then, you couldn't go five blocks in the summer without running into a garage band. Just hanging out I met Rudy Clark's nephew and he helped pay for us to complete a few recordings that got us signed to Brunswick records. Rudy wrote a bunch of tunes that will not die including Good Lovin', The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss) done not too long ago by Cher and Everybody Plays The Fool.

So you were around with Omar Hakim and the crew? Donald Brown?

- Yes, him and Luther Vandross' bassist. Omar was playing with Sting. All the guys from the neighborhood grew up in houses very close to each other but sometimes never met for years. You'd find out halfway around the world that you live only a few blocks from each other.

Do you play all the instruments on Total Eclipse?

- That's all me. Mistakes and all! (laughs) I'm always on the lookout though for people to work with; musicians, agents, composers, collaborators, partners in crime..

What are you working on now?

- The next album's working title is Cosmic Blues on which I sing and Orbit which is starting out to be all instrumental.

Where do you play?

- Manhattan every week. Mostly New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Canada, Spain and France. Germany's picking up too. In New York it The Blue Note, St. Nick's Pub, Pumpkins, Smoke and many others listed on my web site; (all over the Tri-State Area), - if there's space enough for a guitar, I'll play!

Do you teach?

- I occasionally take on students. One hopes for gifted students and its most gratifying when they advance.
